Sustainability
At Maryland Portable Concrete, sustainability is important to us. We employ a variety of environmentally friendly measures to eliminate hazardous concrete waste. MPC continually looks for ways to protect our natural resources by implementing programs and procedures to ensure minimal impact. We will re-use and recycle whenever possible.
Maryland Portable Concrete’s (MPC) foundation is built upon our family values, which distinguishes us and guides our actions. We conduct business in a socially responsible and ethical manner. We respect and continually maintain compliance with all local, state and federal environmental regulations and always strive to reduce our impact on the environment.
Maryland Portable manufactures a Green Product - Pervious Concrete:
Pervious concrete pavement for sidewalks and driveways is a unique and effective means by which to support green sustainable growth. By capturing rain and surface water and allowing it to naturally seep through into the ground it covers, pervious concrete virtually eliminates stormwater runoff and subsequent pollution. This pavement technology also creates more efficient land use by eliminating the need for retention ponds, swales, and other stormwater management devices that typically require clearing and stripping of timber and otherwise natural vegetation.
We Recycle 100% of our Waste Concrete:
MPC owns and operates its own waste concrete recycling crushers. This is extremely beneficial to the environment as we no longer depend on landfills and dumpsites for the removal and disposal of our waste. It is now re-purposed into a very high-quality sub-base material for building slabs and roadways. Ton for ton, it reduces the need for mined quarry materials and their environmentally negative impact.
Maryland Portable Concrete does its part in helping to Save the Chesapeake Bay:
Both of our Elkton and Riverside Plant Facility Properties were carefully engineered and constructed to allow 100% of the industrial area, and nearly the entire impervious surface area, to drain, collect and store all industrial water, truck washing run-off, and natural rainfall. This water is then naturally clarified by gravity as it settles out through a series of containment pits and is then recycled for use in future concrete manufacturing. The settled solid materials are scooped out of the containment pits periodically and recycled along with our waste concrete recycling operation preventing the material and the water that carries it from entering the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
We Use Eco-Friendly Slag Cement:
We incorporate a Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) as cementitious replacement/enhancement into the vast majority of our ready-mix concrete mix designs. This product is produced in a blast furnace during the reduction of iron ore into iron. It consists of non-metallic minerals, which are tapped off from the blast furnace while molten. By processing blast furnace slag into slag cement, the material is diverted from landfills. This utilization of slag also conserves a virgin manufactured product (Portland cement), reduces air emissions at the blast furnace and through the avoided manufacture of Portland cement, and decreases the embodied energy required to produce the cementitious materials. Concrete is an inherently green material that is highly durable. With the use of GGBFS, it can be used to construct energy-efficient building systems and reduce the “heat island” effect because of its lighter color. And approximately one ton of CO2 is released for every ton of cement produced. By using a 25%-50% slag blend, we save 82-374lbs of CO2 emissions per cubic yard. Our industry has made major leaps in reducing greenhouse gases since the 1980’s. Our use of GGBFS is just another small step that we take here at MPC to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
Maryland Portable Concrete’s Reforestation Program:
MPC has just recently embarked on a campaign to reforest all available non-industrial space on its properties. To date we are just shy of 300 newly planted indigenous trees and shrubs at our locations! This will not only help to improve the quality of the air we breathe and improve soil quality, but it will also provide natural habitat for animals and birds in which to thrive.
We provide Portable Concrete Washout Containers to job sites:
Our new portable "Concrete Rinse & Roll" washout containers provide an environmentally green alternative to expensive silt fences and unsightly concrete dumping areas. They also provide a cost-effective way to manage cementitious waste products and the associated caustic water. Delivered by our fleet of roll-off trucks MPC’s Rinse and Roll’s will contain and remove 100% of these waste products from your job site and recycle them at our waste concrete recycling operations.
